Why the Cheapest Drain Quote Gets Expensive: A Price Autopsy from the Drain Nerds

The Cheapest Quote Is Usually the Most Expensive Drain Job You Will Ever Have

We love drains. We love them the way some people love vintage cars or rare fungi. We are not embarrassed about this. And precisely because we have spent so long staring into them, we have also spent a lot of time watching customers get stung by quotes that looked brilliant on the phone and turned into something quite different on the invoice.

This is not a rant. It is a dissection. Let us put the too-cheap drain quote on the slab and see what is actually inside it.

Specimen One: The “From £X” Callout Price

The advert says something like “drain unblocking from £49.” The van arrives. The technician has a look. Then the real quote appears, and it bears no resemblance to the number that got you to pick up the phone.

The “from” price is usually a callout fee, nothing more. It covers the engineer turning up and confirming that yes, you do have a blocked drain. Everything after that, including the actual unblocking, is extra.

A fair, honest quote for a standard drain unblock in the TW area typically runs between £80 and £180 for a straightforward job, depending on access and the nature of the blockage. If someone quotes you £49 for the whole thing before they have even seen it, that number is doing a job, and the job is not unblocking your drain.

Specimen Two: Per-Metre Jetting Charges

High-pressure water jetting is the standard way to clear a stubborn blockage or clean a drain properly. Jetting means blasting water through the pipe at high pressure to break up the blockage and flush it away.

Some companies quote a low headline price for jetting, then charge per metre of pipe they jet through. Your drain run from the house to the sewer connection might be twelve metres. At a per-metre rate that looked reasonable on a short job, twelve metres can quickly multiply the invoice into territory you were not expecting.

Ask any company you are considering: is the jetting charge a flat fee or a per-metre rate? If it is per metre, ask them to estimate the total pipe length before they start. A company that refuses to give you that estimate before beginning work is not one you want in your driveway.

Specimen Three: The “We Cleared It” Return Visit Trap

This one is subtle. The engineer jets the drain, the water flows, they leave. Two days later the blockage is back, because the root cause was never addressed.

Root ingress (tree roots that have grown into the pipe and are physically breaking it apart) will defeat a jet wash every single time if the roots are not removed and the pipe is not repaired or lined. A CCTV survey, which means sending a small camera through the drain to look at the pipe from the inside, would have shown this immediately.

Some companies deliberately skip the survey to keep the initial quote low, knowing they will be back for a second job. The return visit is not a warranty call. It is a new charge.

At Drainiacs we include a CCTV survey recommendation whenever the blockage has come back before or the jetting does not clear it cleanly on the first pass. Knowing what is actually in the pipe is not an upsell. It is just how you fix a drain properly.

What a Straight Quote Should Include

When you call any drainage company, including us, you should expect to hear:

  • A clear callout or assessment fee, stated upfront, not buried in “from” language
  • Whether jetting is included or charged separately, and how
  • What happens if the blockage does not clear on the first attempt
  • Whether a CCTV survey is recommended and what it costs if needed (typically £100 to £250 for a residential survey in the TW area)
  • A written or clearly spoken total before any work begins

If a company cannot or will not answer those questions before arriving, that is useful information.

Why This Happens More in Some Areas Than Others

Whitton and the surrounding TW postcodes sit on a mix of Victorian-era clay pipe and more modern plastic drainage. The older clay runs are more likely to have cracked joints, root ingress and partial collapses that a jet wash alone will not fix. A company that has not worked this area regularly may not account for that. Or they may account for it very well indeed, in the second invoice.

The Honest Version

We are not claiming to be the cheapest drainage company in Whitton or anywhere else in the TW area. We are claiming to tell you the actual price before we start, show up when we say we will, and fix the drain rather than just the symptom.

If you are looking at quotes right now and something feels off, trust that feeling. Read the small print on per-metre charges, ask what the callout fee covers, and find out whether a survey is included or extra.

If you have a blocked drain that needs sorting today, call us on 07700 137648. We are available around the clock, we cover the full TW postcode area, and we will tell you what it costs before we touch anything.
