Weybridge's drains, as we know them
Weybridge, KT13, sits where the Wey meets the Thames, with a Victorian and Edwardian centre around Monument Green, interwar streets towards Hersham, and the private estates of St George’s Hill above it all. Two rivers mean a water table with two sources, and the ground under the town centre is saturated for much of the winter. Old clay runs with any dropped joint take on silt every wet season, and the first storm of the autumn is when we hear from Weybridge.
The honest version of a lot of those calls is that the private drain is clear and the surface water system is backed up because the rivers are high. We will say so rather than clear a clean pipe. When the drain is the problem, the camera finds the joint with the silt behind it and lining it stops the annual repeat.
Up the hill it is a different job: long private runs under big plots and gated drives, a mix of 1930s clay and plastic from recent rebuilds, and a blockage that can be thirty metres from the nearest gully. We survey the full line, clear from the correct chamber and reline rather than dig, because nobody on St George’s Hill wants a trench across the lawn. We cover Weybridge, Hersham and Addlestone around the clock from the Walton side.
