What 2am Drain Emergencies Cost: Night Call-Out Pricing, Explained Straight

Here is the honest truth about calling a drainage company at two in the morning: someone has to answer, drive to you, unload equipment and solve your problem in the dark. That someone is us. We will not pretend we charge the same rate as a Tuesday afternoon appointment, because we do not. But we will tell you exactly what to expect before the van leaves the yard, because a panicking person deserves numbers, not vague reassurances.

Why Night Rates Exist (and Why They Are Reasonable)

Emergency drainage work at unsociable hours carries real costs: a technician on standby, a fully stocked van running at all times, fuel at whatever petrol stations charge at midnight, and the straightforward fact that the person fixing your drain has given up their sleep to do it.

Night call-out rates across the TW postcode area (Twickenham, Richmond, Hounslow, Feltham, Ashford, Staines, Shepperton, Sunbury, Hampton, Teddington, Whitton, Isleworth, Brentford) typically run higher than standard daytime rates. That is the industry norm, and any company telling you otherwise is either hiding it in the small print or about to add it as a surprise on the invoice.

We would rather you know upfront.

Indicative Price Ranges: What You Might Pay

These are honest indicative ranges, not fixed quotes. Every job is different.

  • Standard call-out fee (nights and weekends): typically £80 to £150, covering attendance and the first assessment
  • High-pressure water jetting to clear a blocked drain: typically £150 to £300 for a straightforward residential blockage (jetting is when we blast water through the pipe at very high pressure to break up whatever is causing the problem)
  • CCTV drain survey: typically £150 to £250 (we send a small camera along the pipe on a cable so we can see exactly what is going on inside, filmed and reported)
  • Root cutting or root removal: typically £200 to £400 depending on severity (tree roots grow into pipe joints over years and can cause serious blockages)
  • Drain relining: typically £500 to £1,500 or more depending on pipe length (relining means inserting a new structural sleeve inside a cracked or collapsed pipe without digging it up)

Prices vary with access difficulty, the depth of the drain, how long the job takes, and what the camera finds once we are on site.

What Is Usually Included in the Call-Out Fee

A reputable night call-out fee should cover:

  • Attendance at your property
  • Initial assessment and diagnosis
  • A clear explanation of what is wrong and what fixing it involves
  • A price for the work before anything begins

It should not be a fee that then multiplies silently. Ask before you agree.

What Can Add to the Cost

Some things genuinely cost more and are worth knowing about:

  • Collapsed or cracked pipes found during a CCTV survey may require excavation or relining, both of which are priced separately
  • Interceptor traps (an older sealed chamber in the drainage run, common in pre-1960s properties) can complicate access and add time
  • Soakaways (underground drainage pits that absorb surface water) that have failed need separate assessment
  • Shared or adopted drains that serve multiple properties may involve the water company rather than a private contractor

What to Ask When You Phone at 2am

You are allowed to ask questions. A good drainage company will answer them clearly. Here is what to ask:

  1. What is the call-out fee, and what does it cover?
  2. Will I get a price for the work before you start?
  3. Is there anything that might change that price once you are on site?
  4. How long until you arrive?

Our target arrival time across the TW area is within the hour for genuine emergencies. We will tell you honestly if it is longer.

The 2am Part (Where the Character Comes In)

We will be straight with you: we genuinely do not mind the 2am call. There is something about a blocked drain at night that sharpens the mind. The house is quiet. The problem is right there in front of you. The camera goes in and suddenly you are watching a nature documentary about what has been building up in your pipes for the last decade. Fascinating stuff. Professionally speaking.

The drain does not care what time it is. Neither do we.

A Note on Raw Sewage

If sewage is backing up into your property, this is a health matter as well as a drainage matter. Raw sewage contains bacteria and pathogens that pose a genuine risk, particularly to children, elderly people and anyone with a compromised immune system. Keep people away from the affected area, do not attempt to clear it yourself without appropriate protection, and call immediately. This is not a situation to wait on until morning.

The Straight Bit at the End

Night drainage emergencies are stressful. The pricing should not add to that stress. We charge fair rates for unsociable hours, we tell you what those rates are before we start, and we do not invent extras on the invoice.
